Shop Shelving Guide - Shelving Components Part 2

So now you are an expert on base legs, uprights, back panels and plinths?  In this part we will discuss the remaining common shop shelving components.

Shop Shelves

The shop shelves are obviously the whole point of the shop shelving unit. The base shelves and the upper shelves on the unit are the same, except for the size.  What I mean by this is that the base shelf is only called this because it is sitting on the base legs, there is no difference in the design of the shelf whatsoever from that of the upper shelves.  Normally the base shelf is a size larger than the upper shelves, it can be the same size but never smaller than the upper shelves.  The shop shelves are not just flat pieces of steel they have quite a few design features that are important.

Starting underneath the shelf you will notice the strengthening bars, these provide the strength to the shelf, the number of strengthening bars normally increases with larger shelves. On the picture below of a 370mm shelf you can make out the 2 strengthening bars underneath.  Cheap shelving or light duty shelving usually has a lower number of strengthening bars to cut costs, so it is worth being aware of this when choosing quality shop shelving.  At Shelving Megastore we do not "cheapen" our shop shelves by making the metal thinner, reducing the number of strengthening bars or not properly powder coating the underneath.

On the top of the shelves you can see there are two gulleys running the full length of the shelf, one at the back and one of the front.  These gulleys are for shelving accessories in particular shelf risers and shelf dividers, these will be covered in detail in the next part of this guide.

At the front of the shelf there is a sloping lip, this is to hold the plastic Epos strip, sometimes called a ticket strip or ticket edging.  The Epos strip is used for price labels of the products on the shelf.  Epos strips are available in a wide range of colours to suit the store colour theme and branding.

The base shelf sits on the base legs, the upper shelves use a pair of brackets, sometimes called arms. For small shelf sizes (depth) the brackets are 2 hook type, for 470mm shelves there is a choice of 2 hook brackets or 3 hook brackets which have a higher load capacity.  For 570mm shelves the shelf brackets are 3 hook.  All the brackets can be placed into the shelving uprights in either a horizontal position or a tilted position so that the shelves can be tilted forward to display the products best.

The last component shown on our diagram is the gondola top cover. The gondola top cover is a U shaped component that clips over the top of the back panels and provides a tidy finish.  Gondola top covers are used on most double sided bays including end bays.  The picture below shows gondola top covers, the larger one is for 80mm deep uprights and the smaller one for standard 60mm uprights.
