Summer Lovin’ – Get your shop ready for summer
Oh those lazy days of summer – they are anything but lazy
for the average retailer but in the retail industry it is vital to make hay (and sales!)
whilst the sun shines.
Based in the idyllic county of Cornwall, The Shelving Megastore is particularly aware of the importance of the tourist industry and the demands of the summertime
shopper. A savvy shopkeeper can stay one step ahead of the competition by
getting his shop “summer ready”. Chill out with our great range of refrigeration products.....
Glass Display Drinks Chiller |
Think carefully about how you will display your chilled and frozen products - keep your displays clean, neat and organised. Be aware that brands rapidly go in and out of fashion so be prepared to be ruthless if a product is not paying its way. Review sales constantly and be quick to re-stock supplies of the best sellers.
Stainless Steel multideck chiller |
If space and staffing allows, why not try to organise taster sessions? Customers will enjoy the interaction and this will create a buzz around the high ticket products that you are most keen to sell. Use props such as bottles of wine or fresh flowers to create the right mood for the season.

5 Things you can do today to increase your shop turnover
At Shelving Megastore we know that ultimately the more successful our customers' businesses are the more successful we will be. Shelving Megastore try and save you money on the products you buy from us and we will offer free advice which we hope you will find useful. So what can I do right now to start increasing sales and profits?
Lets start with the things you can do for free!
We hope that you found the suggestions above useful, let us know how you got on or any stories on things you tried and the results you got, lets share all this information and help small and medium sized shops thrive. #Shoplocal
Lets start with the things you can do for free!
- Re-Arrange your product layout:
- Place the higher priced and higher margin products at eye level.
- Put low margin commodity items at the back of the shop, such as bread or newspapers.
- Place the higher margin but also likely impulse buys where customers will see them while waiting to pay.
- Get Involved in the local community to get customers visiting the shop regularly:
- Maybe a small board for local events to be posted or classified adverts.
- Stock the free local newspaper
- Offer some local produce if possible, for example there's nothing like fresh local strawberries in summer.
- Offer cashback if possible
- Try and increase the average customer spend:
- When customers fill their shopping basket they will stop buying so invest in some trolley baskets of large shopping baskets. They will pay for themselves in no time.
- Often in local convenience stores carrying the shopping home is difficult, if possible offer a carry to car service.
- Consider offering customers personal shopping trolleys for sale or even to borrow, the more of your customers with these trolleys the better.
- Give your shop a makeover, this doesn't have to cost a fortune:
- If the shelving epos strips are looking a bit tired, why not replace them? Consider changing the colour of the pricing strips for a bright new look, you will be amazed how effective that can be.
- If you have products in the aisles, consider investing in some dump bins for displaying products neatly and lose the cluttered feeling.
- Increase the range of products on display:
- Are you using the corners of the shop effectively? If not corner shelving units may offer the opportunity to display more products.
- Can you make your shop shelving taller? Increasing the height of the shelving is easy with upright extensions. For example add a peg panel at the top of the sweets section and offer a large range of bagged sweets.
- Does your counter have displays on the front of it? A new shop counter can be a large investment, but it sets the tone for the rest of the shop so it is probably the most important feature. Shop counters with products displayed properly on the front will increase product sales.
We hope that you found the suggestions above useful, let us know how you got on or any stories on things you tried and the results you got, lets share all this information and help small and medium sized shops thrive. #Shoplocal

How to Display Newspapers and Magazines
At Shelving Megastore we have been busy sourcing new products for our great new online store. One of the most requested products has been plastic magazine and newspaper shelves to fit our modular shop shelving. We have offered magazine shelving bays for many years and these offer a fantastic looking display at a great price.
PETG otherwise known as Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol, we will stick to PETG is a clear plastic material that is excellent for making retail displays. Shelving Megastore now offers magazine shelves and vertical newspaper shelves made from PETG. The brackets are still made from steel but can be supplied in standard RAL9001 or RAL9006 colours and custom colours on request. The magazine shelves are available in kits of between 7 and 10 tiers, these kits will fit any 50 pitch shop shelving system. The vertical newspaper shelves are absolutely great, as the name suggests making it possible to display newspapers vertically with the front pages on clear display. The newspaper shelves are sold individually and again will fit any 50 pitch shop shelving system. All our PETG shelves are manufactured in the UK to a very high quality.
At Shelving Megastore we are constantly adding new products so if there is something you cant find or would like us to source or manufacture it for you we can help, just call us on 01752 829467 for friendly advice.

Aladdin's Cave? - Maximise your Retail Space
Do you remember as a child that some shops your parents might have taken you too were like the proverbial Aladdin's cave? every corner and every space seemed to have some wonderful item or another on display or even better hidden treasure? I remember our local hardware shop in the village was like this, they sold everything you could imagine from seeds to fishing tackle or from nails to "have you got something like whatever this is?". Now unfortunately these Aladdin's caves have mainly disappeared except as a curiosity in some rural areas, a victim of the internet age where everything is easy to find and delivered to the door.
Modern stores seem to be a world apart slick displays, neat lines, themed brands and colours. There is however some subconscious desire in many of us for the fun of searching through a shop for a bargain even if not for hidden treasure! The proliferation of pound shops, charity shops and clearance fashion stores seem to bare this out.
At Shelving Megastore we embrace the latest technology and fashions for retail equipment, one thing we do know from Aladdin's cave shops is that retail space is a precious commodity that should be used to the maximum effect, this means displaying as many products as possible, but keeping displays neat and tidy and products easy to find. This is particularly important in small convenience stores and corner shops where using every inch of space is vital. The use of our maximum display shop shelving bays is one way of increasing product display. These shop shelving units have all the shelves the same size, a layout that is often used by shop fitters to achieve maximum display space.
Whether you want to open a large supermarket a chic fashion boutique or an Aladdin's cave we can help you at the Shelving Megastore.

Shop Shelving Guide - Shelving Components Part 2
So now you are an expert on base legs, uprights, back panels and plinths? In this part we will discuss the remaining common shop shelving components.
Shop Shelves
The shop shelves are obviously the whole point of the shop shelving unit. The base shelves and the upper shelves on the unit are the same, except for the size. What I mean by this is that the base shelf is only called this because it is sitting on the base legs, there is no difference in the design of the shelf whatsoever from that of the upper shelves. Normally the base shelf is a size larger than the upper shelves, it can be the same size but never smaller than the upper shelves. The shop shelves are not just flat pieces of steel they have quite a few design features that are important.
Starting underneath the shelf you will notice the strengthening bars, these provide the strength to the shelf, the number of strengthening bars normally increases with larger shelves. On the picture below of a 370mm shelf you can make out the 2 strengthening bars underneath. Cheap shelving or light duty shelving usually has a lower number of strengthening bars to cut costs, so it is worth being aware of this when choosing quality shop shelving. At Shelving Megastore we do not "cheapen" our shop shelves by making the metal thinner, reducing the number of strengthening bars or not properly powder coating the underneath.
On the top of the shelves you can see there are two gulleys running the full length of the shelf, one at the back and one of the front. These gulleys are for shelving accessories in particular shelf risers and shelf dividers, these will be covered in detail in the next part of this guide.
At the front of the shelf there is a sloping lip, this is to hold the plastic Epos strip, sometimes called a ticket strip or ticket edging. The Epos strip is used for price labels of the products on the shelf. Epos strips are available in a wide range of colours to suit the store colour theme and branding.
The base shelf sits on the base legs, the upper shelves use a pair of brackets, sometimes called arms. For small shelf sizes (depth) the brackets are 2 hook type, for 470mm shelves there is a choice of 2 hook brackets or 3 hook brackets which have a higher load capacity. For 570mm shelves the shelf brackets are 3 hook. All the brackets can be placed into the shelving uprights in either a horizontal position or a tilted position so that the shelves can be tilted forward to display the products best.
The last component shown on our diagram is the gondola top cover. The gondola top cover is a U shaped component that clips over the top of the back panels and provides a tidy finish. Gondola top covers are used on most double sided bays including end bays. The picture below shows gondola top covers, the larger one is for 80mm deep uprights and the smaller one for standard 60mm uprights.
